Guest Column:  A View of Bishops from the Inside
By Anne Daniel

As I reflect on the Bishops who have been a part of my life, it comes as little surprise that one of my husband's (henceforth, Dan) clergy spouses had kind things to say.  The role models for Dan and for me have been noteworthy in the most positive sense.  Please note that I am not attaching myself to any accolades that Dan has received - I am only beginning to mobilize efforts towards greater spouse unity but I hope my presence has not been without merit, either.

While we did not know one another in our youth, Dan and I did grow up in the same Diocese, influenced by the same Bishops who were quite caring, supportive individuals - not just in words but in action.  Soon after we were married, the current Bishop and his spouse invited us to stay in their home in Wilmington - a lovely port city with lots of things to see and do - and we accepted their kind offer.  I will always remember that gesture.

Later, when we moved to Rhode Island, the Bishop and his wife were aware that we added another baby to our then roster of 2 children.  They gave us the most thoughtful gift imaginable and something that everyone could enjoy: the video of the sweet and tender movie Babe the Gallant Pig.  The movie was a personal favorite of the Bishop and spouse and one they gave to their own children.  To this day, watching this movie with our own children (and someday, grandchildren) is served up with fond memories and ties that bind.

I cannot imagine a Bishop who is not first and foremost the chief pastor of his flock. I see this responsibility as one of the main foci of his/her work and I believe that Dan does also. To know that even one person has expressed that kind of appreciation is gratifying indeed.
